Avoid Common Painting Blunders Suggested Reading
Avoid Common Painting Blunders
COLOR:
view samples of paint in different light during different times of day, and with different lighting. Colors will look darker on the wall with the exception of glossier paints, which will look lighter.
TYPE:
you need a special primer to paint latex over oil. If you are painting in high humidity areas (such as bathrooms) look for products that resist mold and mildew.
TOOLS:
lower-quality brushes and rollers can increase splattering and brush fibers are more likely to become stuck in the paint. Try a paint edger, a mini-roller with a brush guard that lines up with woodwork so you can paint close to the trim and eliminate the need to tape.
PREPARE:
make certain the area you plan to paint is clean and primed (if needed). Primer will cover old paint colors and blunders and increase the life of your paint job.
APPLICATION:
do two or three coats, the thinner the better and let paint dry between coats.
ACCENTUATE:
paint an accent wall to make a statement, but choose a wall with no doors or windows.
COORDINATE:
paint high ceilings a shade darker and two shades lighter than your wall for lower ceilings.
CONNECT:
to "connect" rooms, keep the trim color consistent and change wall and ceiling colors.
HELP:
if you don't enjoy painting or there are more serious problems, call an expert.
DOCUMENT:
keep a record of colors, brands and types of paint used for touch-ups later on.
