• Better learning — children with pets tend to be more relaxed, which can support easier and more effective learning.
• Socialization — pets give kids something to talk about and create a shared interest with peers.
• Nurturing — caring for a pet encourages children to be more nurturing. This benefit often carries into how they treat siblings and influences how they’ll parent in the future. Boys especially benefit, since nurturing a pet doesn’t carry the same stigma they may associate with playing with dolls.
• Staying healthy — studies suggest pets may boost a child’s immune system, keeping them healthier overall.
• Building family bonds — shared experiences around a pet help strengthen family unity.
