Charlotte Schools Are Back In Session Next Week — Drive Carefully in School Zones 🏫🚌 ⚠️ 🚦

Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools resume classes on Monday, August 25th (with some nearby Charlotte region counties already in session). This means school zones will once again be active and enforced.

Keeping children safe is the most important reason to slow down — but drivers should also be aware of the severe penalties in North Carolina for violating school zone traffic laws.

  • Stay alert — kids can be unpredictable.

  • Follow your school’s drop-off and pickup procedures.

  • Avoid double parking (it reduces visibility).

  • Don’t load/unload children across the street.

  • Make eye contact with children crossing.

  • Don’t pass a stopped car allowing pedestrians to cross.

  • Never pass a stopped school bus from any direction if loading/unloading.

  • Allow extra distance when following school buses.

  • Keep at least 10 feet away from a bus when children are present.

  • When passing child cyclists, leave at least 3 feet of space and proceed slowly.

  • Stay off your phone — distracted driving is especially dangerous in school zones.

  • Always obey posted speed limits and signals, even if you don’t see children or crossing guards.
