Charlotteans Happier Than Other Americans? Study Says Yes.
Are Charlotteans Happier Than Other Americans? Apparently So!
Maybe it’s the Carolina sunshine, our beautiful neighborhoods, the variety of things to do or simply the pleasure of living in a place that offers so much. Whatever the reason, a new study suggests that Charlotte Region residents are happier than the average American.
And here’s something particularly interesting: Charlotte Region homeowners report even greater happiness and life satisfaction than renters.
Charlotte Has Plenty to Smile About!
According to research from the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute, residents across the 14-county Charlotte region rated their overall life satisfaction at 7.4 out of 10, compared with a national average of 6.8 out of 10.
That’s a pretty good endorsement of life in the Queen City!
And the research revealed another interesting finding: Union County residents reported the highest sense of well-being in the region.
So whether you live in Charlotte, Waxhaw, Weddington, Matthews, Fort Mill, Indian Land or one of our many other wonderful communities, there’s plenty to appreciate about calling the Charlotte area home.
Does Homeownership Add to Happiness?
Here’s where the research gets particularly interesting from a real estate perspective.
Homeowners were 23% more likely than renters to report that their lives were satisfying and worthwhile.
Does that mean buying a home automatically makes you happier? Of course not. Happiness is far more complicated than that.
But think about what homeownership can bring to your life.
There’s the stability of having a place that’s yours, the freedom to personalize it, the opportunity to build equity and wealth, and the satisfaction of putting down roots in a community.
It’s also about the everyday pleasures. Hosting family gatherings, relaxing on your patio, getting to know people in your neighborhood or simply having a place where you feel completely at home.
It’s often these everyday experiences that make homeownership so rewarding and contribute to our overall sense of happiness and well-being.
Maybe Charlotte’s Happiness Isn’t Such a Mystery
Think about what we have right here in the Charlotte region.
Beautiful neighborhoods, an abundance of parks and greenways, restaurants, arts and entertainment, professional sports, lakes, charming small towns and easy access to both the mountains and the coast.
Add a relatively mild climate and a wide variety of communities and lifestyles, and it’s not difficult to understand why so many people are happy living here.
Of course, no city is perfect, and happiness depends on far more than geography. But it’s encouraging to see research confirming that Charlotte Region residents feel pretty good about their lives.

It’s about finding the right fit for the way you want to live.
And while I can’t guarantee that owning a home in Charlotte will make you happier, it’s nice to know we’re starting with a region where people already have plenty of reasons to smile!
