Charlotte’s Population Is Booming!

Charlotte’s population boom is accelerating at a record pace. A new report from the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance shows that the Charlotte metro area is now gaining an average of 157 new residents every single day — a dramatic leap from the 113 daily arrivals just a year ago. In 2025, Charlotte became the 14th largest U.S. city by population. This significant population increase makes Charlotte the sixth-fastest growing major city in terms of numeric growth nationwide, outpacing larger metropolitan areas such as Phoenix, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Charlotte Region’s population has grown 20% since 2010 and is projected to grow another 12% by 2030. With this kind of growth, is it any wonder that Charlotte is ranked as a 2025 Top Real Estate Market?
Why This Matters
The steady climb underscores Charlotte’s magnetic pull as a destination for talent, jobs, and opportunity. Since 2020, the Alliance’s yearly analysis has tracked consistent growth, fueled by the pandemic-era migration wave to the Sun Belt.
-
2021: 83 new residents per day
-
2022: 84 new residents per day
-
2023: 113 new residents per day
-
2024: 157 new residents per day
Using U.S. Census data from July 2023 to July 2024, the Alliance estimates that the 14-county Charlotte region added 57,300 new residents through migration alone.
The Bigger Picture
This surge is both a blessing and a challenge. On one hand, a swelling workforce signals a vibrant economy and strengthens the case for businesses investing in the region. On the other hand, it raises concerns about traffic congestion, strained infrastructure, housing affordability, and classroom overcrowding.
“Charlotte is proving to be the kind of community that draws in top talent,” said Tracy Dodson, the Alliance’s COO and head of economic development.
By The Numbers
-
Mecklenburg County: +22,000 residents (1.9% growth)
-
Iredell County: +5,900 residents (3% growth)
-
International migration: 49% of newcomers, boosted by 800+ foreign-owned companies in the region
What’s Next
The timing of this report is significant because it lands just as the Alliance is pushing a $3 million campaign backing a 1-cent sales tax for transit and road projects on the November ballot — expected to raise $19.4 billion over 30 years. Expect city leaders to highlight the 157-a-day figure in making their case, much as they used last year’s numbers to help secure a record $2.5 billion school bond.
Looking further ahead, the Charlotte region’s population is projected to soar from today’s 3 million to 4.6 million by 2050.
The Bottom Line
Charlotte’s population is booming — and the growth shows no signs of slowing. The real test will be how the region will keep pace with the demand for housing, infrastructure, and services while maintaining the qualities that make it such a draw in the first place.
