Excellent schools are a significant determinant of home values in the Greater Charlotte area and demand for homes in certain neighborhoods. As in prior years, Charlotte/Mecklenburg, Union County, and York County had the lion’s share of top rated high schools in the Greater Charlotte area. TOP RANKED HIGH SCHOOLS IN CITY OF CHARLOTTE/MECKLENBURG COUNTY
The City of Charlotte’s Charlotte Mecklenburg School System (CMS) had seven high schools rank in the top 10. Four high schools ranked in the top 10 schools. The top ranked high schools in Charlotte include:
- Ardrey Kell High School in south Charlotte’s Ballantyne area ranked #3 in Charlotte area’s best public high schools and #1 best public high school in Mecklenburg County. Ardrey Kell is also ranked as the 10th best public high school out of 618 in North Carolina. Ardrey Kell High School enjoys an average graduation rate of 97% and according to state test scores, 91% of students are at least proficient in math and 86% in reading. - Lake Norman Charter School in Huntersville, ranked #8 of public schools in the Charlotte area and the #1 Best Charter High School in the Charlotte region. Lake Norman Charter School also ranked as #4 best charter high school in North Carolina out of 78 charter high schools. The school also ranked #34 out of 618 public high schools in North Carolina. The school enjoys an average graduation rate of 95% and according to state test scores, 79% of students are at least proficient in math and 82% in reading.
- Charlotte Engineering Early College in north Charlotte, ranked #7 in the Charlotte area as a top public high school, #4 as a Best Magnet High School in the Charlotte region, #2 best public high school in Mecklenburg County. Charlotte Engineering is also ranked #9 out of 56 magnet high schools in North Carolina. The school also ranked #25 out of 618 public high schools in North Carolina. The school enjoys an average graduation rate of 95% and according to state test scores, 90% of students are at least proficient in math and 87% in reading.
- Myers Park High School in Charlotte’s South Park area, ranked #6 best public high school in Mecklenburg County and #16 in the entire Charlotte area. The school also ranked #67 out of 618 public high schools in North Carolina. The school enjoys an average graduation rate of 87% and according to state test scores, 81% of students are at least proficient in math and 75% in reading. - Community School of Davidson in Davidson, ranked #11 in the entire Charlotte region and the #3 Best Charter High School in the Charlotte region.
- Providence High School in south Charlotte, ranked #5 best public high school in Mecklenburg County and #15 in the entire Charlotte area. The school also ranked #61 out of 618 public high schools in North Carolina. The school enjoys an average graduation rate of 95% and according to state test scores, 89% of students are at least proficient in math and 88% in reading. - William Amos Hough High School in Cornelius, ranked #7 best public high school in Mecklenburg Count and #17 in the entire Charlotte area. The school also ranked #81 out of 618 public high schools in North Carolina. The school enjoys an average graduation rate of 94% and according to state test scores, 83% of students are at least proficient in math and 81% in reading. Although not in the top 15 ranked public high schools in the Charlotte area, two Charlotte-Mecklenburg public high schools were rated in the top 20, including:
- Corvian Community School in north Charlotte was ranked #17 in the entire Charlotte region. It is also ranked as the #4 best Charter High School in Charlotte.

Union County, just east of Charlotte, had four schools rank in the top 20. Four high schools ranked in the top 10 schools. Union County Public School System (UCPS) is ranked as the third best school system in North Carolina. The top-ranked Union County high schools include:

Fort Mill, South Carolina, just south of Charlotte, had both of its two high schools rank in the top 20. The top ranked Fort Mill high schools include:

Charter and Magnet Schools in the Charlotte region rank high in the Charlotte region. Three of the region’s Charter High Schools and two Magnet High Schools made the top 10 ranked list. In all, six of the Charlotte region’s charter and magnet schools were ranked in the top 15 public high schools.
